A show not to be missed! For the 20th edition of the Festival, and in keeping with its spirit initially instilled by the event’s late artistic director, we have once again invited the gifted Cuban pianist Chucho Valdes for an exceptional concert during which the founder of mythical band Irakere will revive a 50-year-old project: JazzBata. The son of great pianist Bebo Valdes, Chucho wanted to take Cuban jazz to new heights with the Bata, the sacred drum of the Yoruba religion. “To play ‘Cuban style,’ you need extensive knowledge of African music and its roots, you must master the sound and language of drums and transpose them to the keyboard…” everything is tied up to the rhythms and the percussion’s spiritual power. The spirit will be with us on this special night featuring the great American saxophonist Kenny Garrett and the widely acclaimed young violinist Yilian Canizares.
And as good luck never comes alone, we will be deeply honored to welcome Buena Vista Social Club Diva Omara Portuondo for a special duet with Chucho.
