Based on the eponymous works by Marcel Pagnol, Vladimir Cosma’s Jazz Opera Marius and Fanny is in keeping with Five Continents Jazz Festival’s desire to undertake original projects designed especially for the Marseille scene. Previewed at the Silo last December, the poignant love story set in Marseille takes on a new and exciting dimension as the two hour-long jazz show unfolds. The performance reflects our city in a unique way. We have brought together artists from the jazz world and other backgrounds to set to music the masterpiece written by Aubagne-born academician Marcel Pagnol. Jazz is commensurate with life itself in that it pulses to its rhythm, exposes its contours, and embraces its adventures. Vladimir Cosma probes the human soul in order to restore its dramaturgy. The vocal and orchestral cast deliver a brilliant performance drawing on a broad spectrum of wit, emotion, drama, and love. “At first, I couldn’t see the point in adapting for the jazz scene the piece I had composed for the opera in 2007. But I later realized that Marcel Pagnol most certainly wrote Marius and Fanny to a jazz tune. Indeed, jazz music was playing everywhere in France back then, and Marcel Pagnol was a true fan. As it happens, in 1926 he named one of his first plays Jazz.” Vladimir Cosma is a friend of the Festival and of its founder Roger Luccioni. Few people know that the world-famous film composer is also a great jazz enthusiast, and that prestigious jazzmen like Chet Baker and Stan Getz worked with him. What convinced him to arrange a jazz version of his Opera for us? Only he can answer that question; we, for our part, are deeply proud and honored for his collaboration.
