An indisputable protagonist of the British jazz scene along with Shabaka Hutchings, Zara McFarlane, Moses Boyd, Theon Cross, Ezra Collective and Kokoroko, saxophonist and composer Nubya Garcia builds bridges to dub-step and the sounds of the African diaspora, from cumbia to calypso. Born 31 years ago to a Guyanese mother and a Trinidadian father in London’s Camden Town, she grew up in a creative and musical environment. Nubya started learning the saxophone at the age of ten. She was enrolled in some of the best music schools in the country and as a high school student received a scholarship to the Berklee College of Music in Boston, the Harvard of jazz.Two EPs followed by a first full-length entitled Source in 2020, a true mapping of her identity, established her as one of the stars of contemporary jazz. She won the Pitchfork “Best New Music” award and a Rolling Stone “Album of the Month”. Source was also shortlisted for the prestigious Mercury Prize 2021, one of only 12 albums to be nominated to celebrate the best in British music. She has made a huge impact internationally and in the UK, with this debut album breaking into the Top 30 of the UK charts. Her charisma on stage and soulful tenor, with which she experiments with effects, promise intense and soaring concerts.
