A prodigy. At the age of 4, Tigran Hamasyan is making his hand at the piano, all alone on Led Zeppelin, the Beatles or Louis Armstrong. “One day, you will play on the same stage as Herbie Hancock”, predicted the boy’s uncle, amazed by his nephew’s absolute ear.
The future proved him right and more, since Herbie Hancock declares today that Tigran Hamasyan is like a teacher to him. This gives a good idea of how far this artist has come in just a few years and how unique he is. We could start with his musical heritage, which is steeped in rock, jazz and the rich folklore of Armenia, the country where he was born thirty-five years ago.
The combo may seem incongruous, and yet it is precisely in this assembly, to which one should add a slight tropism for rock metal, that Tigran Hamasyan sparkles as he proves it, album after album. A little more than ten, including three made during the confinement. The last one to date, “The Call Within” (the call from within in French). The result is literally bewitching, an intense sound and musical journey in the heart of his influences. But it is of course on stage that the magic of Tigran Hamasyan works best. Just for the pleasure of seeing him accompany himself sometimes by whistling.
